Whoooo's Having a Birthday???

Nope, it's not me - it's my daughter!  She loves owls and I found an adorable owl cake at Better Homes and Gardens.  I decided I HAD to make it for her, but there were a few glitches...

As you may remember, we are in "full packing mode" around here and after I bought everything I needed, I remembered that the mixer was packed!  Did I let that stop me?  No way, you CAN mix a cake by hand and that's exactly what I did!
Isn't he a hoot?  Yes, pun intended!

I made a few changes from the original instructions.  The area where the almond slices are was supposed to be yellow frosting and, you guessed it, the food coloring is packed!  I also used Rolos for the eyes.  The instructions suggested malted milk balls, but I thought he needed a little glitz!  Instead of making frosting from scratch, I used canned - packing, you know!

Here's a pic of the Birthday Girl and her cake:
I think she liked it!

Pretty It Up! Upcycled Planner

Welcome back everyone!  Here's a quick project I finished right before my Craft Room was packed.
I always get these sample planners in the mail.  They list your organization's name and all the possibilities you could have printed on the inside flaps.  I liked the planner, but not the cover or inside flaps.  So, what's a girl to do?  Cover it!
I started with this:

I covered it with cardstock - both inside and outside.
For some reason, this photo flipped itself. Technology is wonderful, isn't it?!

Then, I stamped a chicken wire background stamp all over it to give it some texture.  Papers from Graphics 45 were added and the planner was transformed!
Sorry about the flash - I was having camera issues and really needed to be packing!

I added the 3 bronze studs in the lower-right corner and a ribbon along the left seam -which actuall serves a purpose:
No more searching for the correct page!

And that's it.  A simple transformation and I didn't have to toss a perfectly good planner because I couldn't use any of the information contained on the cover or inside flaps!

So, the next time you get one of those samples in the mail - Pretty It Up!

Ann - who's going back to her packing now!

Wise words.

Mirror, Mirror...

Welcome Back, Everyone!  The packing is in full-swing now that school is out (see here for the moving info) and I am retired.  Retired...hasn't really hit me yet.  I think it will when August comes around and I'm NOT getting ready for a new school year!  Stay tuned for that post!

I wanted to share this beautiful mirror make-over with all of you before it gets packed in its box!  I found this beauty at an Estate Sale for $20.  I really didn't like the finish, but knew I could easily change that!
I fell in love with the details on it, though!

This was the easiest transformation ever...add one can of spray paint...and get this:
Here's another angle:
All ready to be boxed-up for the big move!

Amazing what a can of spray paint can do, isn't it?  I'm sure this wil be one of many transformations once we are moved.

Be sure to stop by again soon.  I still have a thing or two saved for this transition time..aka, moving across the country!
Have a fabulous week!

War Brides - Book Review

Amazingly, with all the "hustle-bustle" of getting ready to move, I've still carved out some time for reading and I absolutely LOVED this book!

As WWII begins five young women become fast friends.  Their lives intertwine and their stories unfold. The sacrifices they made reminded me of stories that my own mother told me about WWII.  The struggles and pain of war are perfectly depicted in this novel.

Put this book on your Summer Reading List.  You won't be disappointed!
